Lent 2026

Lent is a special season in the Church's year when Catholics prepare for Easter. It lasts for 40 days, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending before the celebration of Easter. During this time, we remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert, praying and growing closer to God.
At our school, Lent is a time to pause, reflect and grow in faith. We encourage our pupils to think about how they can follow Jesus more closely in their daily lives. During this time, we focus on three important practices during Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
-
Prayer means spending time with God. In school we take time for quiet reflection, collective worship and class prayers, asking God to help us love and serve others.
-
Fasting means giving something up or making simple choices. Children might try to be more thoughtful about their actions, practise self-control or give up small treats as a reminder to put God first.
-
Almsgiving means helping those in need. During Lent we often support charities like CAFOD and encourage acts of kindness, generosity and service within our school community and beyond.
Throughout the season, pupils take part in special liturgies, Lenten retreats and learn about the meaning of Lent in their RE lessons and reflect on the journey that leads to the joy of Easter. It is also a time when we think about forgiveness, making good choices and caring for one another.
Lent reminds us that small acts of love can make a big difference. By praying together, making thoughtful sacrifices and helping others, we grow as a community that follows the example of Jesus. As we journey through Lent together, we look forward to celebrating the hope and new life of Easter.
We have carefully selected resources to help everyone in our school community explore the themes of Lent: compassion, self-examination and hope. They provide gentle pathways for understanding the significance of this liturgical season and how we can apply its principles in our daily lives.
We believe that these materials will not only enhance our spiritual understanding but also provide opportunities for meaningful conversations within families and classrooms. We encourage you to explore these resources together, to discuss their meaning, and to reflect on how we can embody the values of Lent in our actions and interactions.
